Dallas Cowboys Urged To Sign Former All-Pro Wide Receiver

The Dallas Cowboys could certainly use some wide receiver help behind CeeDee Lamb, but they haven’t really addressed the problem this offseason.

The Cowboys didn’t sign any receivers in free agency, and they didn’t select one in the NFL Draft until Ryan Flournoy in the sixth round.

Dallas cut Michael Gallup, leaving Brandin Cooks and not a whole lot more behind Lamb. It should also be noted that Cooks was a pretty significant disappointment for the club in 2023.

So, why have the Cowboys failed to remedy this issue?

Obviously, Dallas has serious financial constraints, which is the reason why the club didn’t go after Derrick Henry or any of the other top-tier running backs on the free-agent market. It’s also a big reason why the team has yet to reach long-term extensions with any of Dak Prescott, Lamb or Micah Parsons.

The Cowboys are clearly being careful about what they spend, and that is perfectly understandable.

However, if Dallas seriously wants to contend for a Super Bowl next season, it is probably going to need to start filling some of these holes.

That’s why Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus feels that the Cowboys should take a look at former New Orleans Saints star Michael Thomas.

There was a time when Thomas was one of the best wide outs in football, but injuries have since sapped him considerably. He played in just 10 games last season due to a knee injury, logging 39 catches for 448 yards and a touchdown.

But he could be a potential low-risk, high-reward pickup.

The 31-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was selected by the Saints in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

He registered over 1,000 yards in each of his first four NFL seasons, topping out at 1,725—which led the league—in 2019. Thomas also paced the NFL with 149 receptions that year, marking the second straight year he led the league in catches.

Between 2017 and 2019, Thomas made three straight trips to the Pro Bowl and also earned a couple of First-Team All-Pro selections.

However, in 2020, Thomas suffered an ankle injury that knocked him out after just seven games. He missed all of 2021 and then appeared in just three contests in 2022.

For a Cowboys club that is in dire need of receiver help, it may be worth giving Thomas a shot.
